Coire na h-Eirghe, Mamores
Tuesday 9th January 2018

Weather/Conditions: Wintry; snow on the hills, gusty on the summits (not that we went to the top)
Distance/Ascent/Time: 7.5km / 600m / 4h 55m
Accompanying: Kate

This was the first walk of the year in my first full winter living in the Highlands.

Kate and I headed for the Mamores with the intention of getting a Munro summit in, some winter hills and some winter skills in the corries. I was just starting to play around with diet but it was enough that I felt absolutely 'smashed'. The tanks felt really very empty and it was interesting and unusual to feel that way.

We parked at the MacDonald and headed up the WHW track. More than anything, it was a dark day. Especially in the cleft of Loch Leven and barred in by hills, the sun seemed far off. The land was only half-illuminated and darkness would soon return.

Progress wasn't quick but then I wasn't in a mood to go too fast either. We headed into Coire na h-Eirghe, and half-way up reaslied we were running out of time for the high tops. The cloud was flying by the tops. There was a wildness to the high summits above. So it was back the way we came instead, reaching the car park at very last light.
